ALTO, the industry group representing telecommunications operators in Ireland has again urged the telecomms regulator (ComReg) to introduce interim prices for fixed-to-mobile calls. ALTO made its remarks in the light of a decision this week by Italy’s telecomms regulator to impose price reductions on mobile operators. Italy’s regulator (AGCOM) has issued a ruling which will see rates for fixed-to-mobile access charges fall by 34% over three years. A 12% reduction will take effect from June. The regulator estimates that the ruling will lead to savings of over E270m. This development in Italy follows the recent decision of the UK’s telecomms regulator (Oftel) that mobile operators must cut their charges by up to 30 per cent this year.
