Irish Broadband provides wireless broadband Internet access to both business and home Internet users. The company is a subsidiary of NTR plc., Ireland’s leading private sector developer, financier and operator of public infrastructure. In July 2002, Irish Broadband received a licence to operate wireless broadband networks from ComReg and commenced customer connections from August 2002.
Paul Doody, Managing Director, Irish Broadband said “We always realized that the digital media sector is of huge importance to Ireland’s future economic development and is a result of the union of technology, media and telecommunications. We are proud to be at the forefront of this emerging sector.
Irish Broadband, having been launched officially by Minister Ahern in May 2003, continues to aggressively connect both residential and business customers to its high speed Internet access service. Paul Doody added, “by providing last mile connectivity using wireless technology, Irish Broadband is meeting the rising demand for cheaper, more reliable broadband services.”
Irish Broadband offers Internet access at speeds that are substantially quicker, and much more affordable. In addition, Irish Broadband offers a range of added Internet services including hosting and security. With 12 high sites located in Dublin, service is available to both business and home users throughout the city and suburbs.
In November 2003, the company was awarded seven prime licenses by ComReg to provide wireless broadband Internet access in the 3.5GHz band in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Drogheda and Dundalk. Paul Doody says that this will lead to 80% penetration of the market by mid-2004. A Cork office will be officially opened and the service launched in early March. This nationwide expansion will result in the creation of 60 new jobs within the company in 2004.
In addition, a branch office has been opened in Northern Ireland. NTR Broadband has commenced connecting both business and home users throughout the province of Northern Ireland.
Irish Broadband was honored with the prestigious 0²2DMA award as “Digital Media Service Provider”. This award was given to Irish Broadband based on being the best in its class, delivering a service that is quick to deploy and is suitable for home users, SME’s and corporate/multinationals with a suite of products designed to suite varying demands. The service is symmetrical with lower contention than other providers which means higher quality. Irish Broadband provides a real alternative to DSL, ISDN and leased lines. Businesses can receive a superior service while also improving economies of scales with savings up to 60%.
